Move It or Lose It!

Wednesday, August 14, 2019

With the advent of technology such as cell phones, and wireless internet, our lives are busier than ever. However, even with all of the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives, studies show that Americans are less active and less physically fit.

Research suggests that a mere 21 percent of adults are meeting established physical activity guidelines and even worse only 5 percent of adults perform 30 minutes or more of physical activity every day!

Since the 1960’s jobs that required moderate to heavy physical activity have decreased by an estimated 80%. Additionally our work force has rapidly been digitized and automated since the advent of robots and computers.

With technology making hard labor a lot less common, sedentary jobs have increased 83% since 1950, according to the American Heart Association.  More people are sitting behind a desk for 6 to 7 hours a day with little to no activity.

This lifestyle of comfort and growing physical inactivity has actually caused the incidence of chronic health conditions in America to be the only thing that is growing. When you combine the inactivity of an average workday with the time we spend traveling, sleeping and wasting time on social media and the internet, it barely leaves any time left to move.

It is estimated that 20% of all deaths for people over 35 years old can be attributed to a lack of physical activity.

Here are some ways to reduce the amount of time spent sedentary:

  • walk to work and on lunch break
  • set reminders to stand up every 30 minutes when working at a desk
  • invest in a standing desk or ask the workplace to provide one
  • take phone calls outside and walk around at the same time
  • spend some free time being active rather than watching television or playing video games
  • take the stairs instead of using the elevator
  • park farther away from stores even if there is a closer spot

So as the old saying goes, Move it or Lose it! The it being your Health.
